Our early season hike on south facing slopes west of Trapper's Lake was a bit ambitious, given the late afternoon start. Arriving back at the car just before sunset, we were unaware of the developing sunset as we drove back south to our campsite at Trapper's Lake. Suddenly, as we rounded a bend in the switchbacks, we were treated to an incredible sky just after the sun had dipped below the horizon, with vivid-red/purple/yellow clouds and an orange horizon. Although it was too late to start painting, I stopped, sketched and took notes. The following morning, I found a suitable foreground elsewhere and used my memory and a photo of the sunset to reconstruct the physical and emotional beauty I had experienced the previous day.
